What happened
Plaintiff's counsel filed papers containing AI-generated hallucinations and inaccuracies in their December 4 filings. Counsel conceded that sanctions were warranted.
The rule and the sanction
The court ordered counsel to reimburse defendants for the fees and costs resulting from the defective December 4 filings. The amount was deferred so the parties could agree on it or submit further briefing. (The row's "$9,000" figure is unsupported by the document and is not used here.)
How it could have been avoided
(a) Confirm that every case cited in a filing exists and says what the filing claims before submission. (b) Conceding the error early limits the sanction; opposing further briefing does not. (c) Build a firm rule that no AI-drafted authority reaches a filing without independent verification.
