The case

Barteca Holdings LLC v. Tacobarn Newtown LLC / Tacobarn Greenwich LLC, D. Conn., No. 26-CV-250 (VDO), order filed August 4, 2026 (Judge Vernon D. Oliver). Copy of primary document: `~/workspace/goals/ai-sanctions-case-monitoring/files/sources/D-164-barteca-holdings-v-tacobarn.pdf`.

What happened

Defense counsel Hilary Miller used Open Law, Claude, and ChatGPT to prepare filings, but verified only that the cited cases existed, not the quotations, propositions, or pin cites attributed to them. The court found this partial verification insufficient: confirming a case exists does not confirm what it says.

The rule and the sanction

Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 11. The court imposed a $3,500 monetary sanction payable to the court and referred Miller to the District of Connecticut Grievance Committee. Related motions were resolved separately: the motion to exclude was withdrawn and the motion to dismiss terminated with leave to correct.

How it could have been avoided

Existence-checking is half a verification. Read the cited pages and confirm the quotation and the pin cite, because AI tools are fluent at attaching real case names to invented quotes.
